GOSSYPIUM HERBACEUM

Gossypium Herbaceum.

Cotton Plant. Malvaceae.

The cotton producing plant of the South; a native of Asia. The root possesses the medical virtues, and the tincture is prepared from the fresh inner root-bark, chopped and pounded to a pulp.

SENSORIUM. [2]

Giddiness of head.

INNER HEAD. [3]

Stinging pain in head, going from forehead to vertex.
Pain, first burning, then stinging, extending from both temporal bones to middle of frontal bone.
Drawing pain over eyes, with stinging pain in pupils.
Knocking pain in right parietal bone.

SMELL AND NOSE. [7]

Nostrils swollen and inflamed, left agg.

TASTE, SPEECH, TONGUE. [11]

Taste of bad eggs, amel. after breakfast.

INNER MOUTH. [12]

Tonsils swollen, right agg.

HICCOUGH, BELCHING, NAUSEA AND VOMITING. [16]

Nausea, with accumulation of saliva in mouth.
Nausea with inclination to vomit in morning before breakfast.
Morning sickness. ~ Pregnancy.

SCROBICULUM AND STOMACH. [17]

Rotating sensation in pit of stomach, with uneasiness, anxiety and sighing.
Anorexia, with uneasy, depressed feeling at scrobiculum cordis, at time of menses.

HYPOCHONDRIA. [18]

Stitching in right hypochondrium, lasting for a few minutes, and then drawing pain from both hypochondriac regions to pit of stomach.

FEMALE SEXUAL ORGANS. [23]

Stinging pain in both ovarian regions, and at the same time drawing towards uterus, lasting about ten minutes at a time.
Soreness between thigh and vulva, with a watery secretion.
Soft tumor between left thigh and vulva, first as large as pea, and increasing to size of pigeon's egg, secreting a watery fluid, with sticking pain as if caused by a needle, agg. at night.
Swelling of outer part of left labium, accompanied by intolerable itching; some swelling in right labium.
Outer skin of both labia studded with innumerable pale, somewhat reddish granules.
Amenorrhea; dysmenorrhea; menorrhagia.
Scanty and painful or painless menses.
Amenorrhea, with anemia, and dyspeptic symptoms.
Menstrual flow lasts about twenty-four hours, and then becomes very sparse and painful.
Menses too watery and nineteen days too late.
Sterility, from uterine torpor.

PREGNANCY. PARTURITION. LACTATION. [24]

Morning sickness during early months of pregnancy; sensitiveness over hypogastric region; prostration of nervous system almost to syncope; nausea from least motion in morning soon after waking, with distress in pit of stomach; and immediately on raising head, retching and violent efforts to vomit; at first very little comes up, except wind, with a loud noise; soon after, saliva and some thick fluid is discharged, and, occasionally, after much retching, a little bilious matter, but rarely any ingesta; wind is often discharged from bowels during efforts to vomit.
Morning vomiting, followed by faintness; she was unable to rise from bed.
Great distress, weakness and prostration. ~ Morning sickness.
Miscarriage.
In cases of lingering almost painless labors, where the uterine contractions are feeble or entirely inefficient. The case presents negative rather than positive symptoms.
Retained placenta.

UPPER LIMBS. [32]

Tearing pains in right arm and hand, and jumping pain from one finger to another.
Pale, red, papular eruption on back of both hands, with intense itching and watery exudation.
Heavy feeling in both hands, amel. when hanging them down, agg. in warmth of bed.
Crawling sensation in all the fingers, as if from worms.

LOWER LIMBS. [33]

Stinging, drawing, tearing, and burning pain in lower extremities.
Trembling, twitching, and weary sensation in legs.
Small, round, dark red spots, with pale red spots around patella, on skins and ankles, itching intensely.

REST. POSITION. MOTION. [35]

On raising head: retching and violent efforts to vomit.
Unable to rise from bed: from faintness and nausea.
When hanging hands down: heavy feeling amel.
Motion: nausea from least motion.

NERVES. [36]

General lassitude, with pains as if beaten.

TIME. [38]

Morning: nausea with inclination to vomit.
Night: sticking pain in tumor agg.

TEMPERATURE AND WEATHER. [39]

Warmth of bed: agg. heavy feeling in hands.

FEVER. [40]

General external chilliness, with internal heat.

ATTACKS, PERIODICITY. [41]

The pains are wandering, come and go.
A few minutes: itching in hypochondrium.
About ten minutes at a time: drawing towards uterus.
Twenty-four hours: menstrual flow.
Menses nineteen days too late.
During early months of pregnancy: morning sickness.

LOCALITY AND DIRECTION. [42]

Right: knocking pain in parietal bone; tonsil swollen; itching in hypochondrium; some swelling of labium; tearing pains in arm and hand.
Left: soft tumor between thigh and vulva; swelling of outer part of labium; itching of labium.
Pains are generally from above downward; agg. by motion; amel. by rest.

SENSATIONS. [43]

As if caused by a needle; pain in soft tumor; crawling sensation in fingers as if from worms; as if beaten.
Painful menses: pains as if beaten.
Tearing pains: in right arm; in hand; in lower extremities.
Stinging pain: in head from forehead to vertex; from both temporal bones to middle of frontal bone; in pupils; in both ovarian regions; in lower extremities.
Sticking pain: in soft tumor between left thigh and vulva.
Burning pain: from both temporal bones to middle of frontal bone; in lower extremities.
Jumping pain: from one finger to another.
Knocking pain: in right parietal bone.
Drawing pain: over eyes; from both hypochondria regions to pit of stomach; in lower extremities.
Soreness: between thighs and vulva.
Anxiety: in pit of stomach.
Sensitiveness: over hypogastric region.
Uneasiness: in pit of stomach.
Uneasy, depressed feeling at scrobiculum cordis at time of menses.
Drawing: towards uterus.
Twitching sensation: in legs.
Trembling sensation: in legs.
Rotating sensation: in pit of stomach.
Crawling sensation: in all fingers.
Distress: in pit of stomach.
Heavy feeling: in both hands.
Weary sensation: in legs.
Weakness.
Itching: in right hypochondrium; in outer part of left labium; intense on backs of both hands; intense on red spots on shins and ankles; of skin all over body.
Itching changes to burning after scratching.

TISSUES. [44]

Sympathetic symptoms of stomach, heart, bowels and nervous system, arising from disturbance of uterine functions, connected with menses or pregnancy.

SKIN. [46]

Itching of skin over whole body.
Itching changes to burning after scratching.
