Legatum Homeopathicum

Wednesday 23rd, October 2013

Dear subscriber,

we are pleased to inform you that we have published the full text of The Guiding Symptoms of Our Materia Medica.

The Guiding Symptoms of Our Materia Medica, known to homeopathic profession as Hering's Guiding Symptoms, belongs to our most important and trustworthy materia medicae. Commenced by Constantine Hering (the first two volumes) and finished by Charles G. Raue, Calvin B. Knerr and Charles Mohr over the course of some 10 years (who edited the work from Dr. Hering's papers and possibly other sources), it comprises 10 volumes of mostly clinically confirmed symptoms.

The original text has been improved in certain ways:

  • The text of the remedies is parsed into separate pages and linked to Project Remedies and vice versa. Example: The Document Descriptor of Capsicum annuum record links to its corresponding record within Project Remedies and vice versa. The URL path of the remedy also includes the corresponding remedy ID from the Project Remedies thereby ensuring clear remedy assignment.
  • The original markings of the symptom grading by means of | and || have been replaced by colors and font types, so it's more readily identifiable. Read the arrangement for detailed information.
  • For the sake of saving paper, some abbreviations have been used in the original work, e.g. "l." instead of "left", "r." instead of "right", "<" instead of "agg." These have been reverted to full words, in order to facilitate the search. Read the arrangement for detailed information.
  • The sentences have been parsed and marked by unique identifiers (anchors) so you can reference a specific symptom with ease. For example, to link to a Carbo vegetabilis symptom "Cold knees, particularly in night.", use http://www.legatum.sk/en:mm:hering:carbo-vegetabilis-r22#s621 The anchor here is s621 – you can locate the corresponding anchor by clicking on "Edit this page button" on a remedy page and finding the anchor name in the source text just prior to the symptom you wish to link to.

We hope you'll enjoy this release. Please note you can edit most of the pages on Legatum Homeopathicum web site, by clicking "Edit this page button" on the right side of the page, so if you find a typo, you can fix it right away, no need to wait for someone else to do it for you.

Drawing a Line in the Sand: Homeopathy or Not Homeopathy?

Instead of the usual question and answer by André Saine, we are offering you one of his older articles concerning his further arguments against speculative homeopathy. The article was a response to a letter signed by twenty-one prominent teachers of homeopathy, which was published in Homeopathy Today, May 2001.

Recommended article – Author's Preface to The Guiding Symptoms

This is a much recommended preface to Hering's Guiding Symptoms, the culminating effort of 50+ years of Dr. Hering's homeopathic experience. It not only describes the purpose and the arrangement of the work, but also explains the logic behind the grading of the symptoms, along with some important general ideas regarding the inclusion of symptoms into our materia medicae. The points of argument are illustrated by quotations from Hahnemann's Organon.
