Dear subscriber,

various colds, coughs and inflammations of mucous membranes (catarrhs) are common occurrence, so it's unsurprising the recent addition of Brigham's Catarrhal diseases of the nasal and respiratory organs aroused considerable interest.

Following up on this, I would like to share with you a very powerful cleansing technique that greatly assists removal of nasal mucus and other products of elimination from nasal cavities, thus speeding up the cure or at least keeping the matters from aggravating.

The technique is an ancient one, called Vyutkrama kapalabhati, and it is an important part of the yogic system of body cleansing techniques. The practice itself is a very simple one – it involves sniffing lukewarm normal saline water through the nostrils and letting it flow down into the mouth and then spitting it out. Simple enough, right? And it is – if you manage to overcome an uneasy sensation created by breathing in water through your nostrils, which is the only real obstacle to pass in order to start benefiting from using this powerful technique. It is similar to Jala Neti (a practice where saline water is poured into one nostril, so that it leaves through the other), just much better.

Normal saline is the commonly used phrase for a solution of 0.90% of NaCl (common salt), which is about 9 grams of salt per liter of water. This kind of solution is sometimes also called isotonic. There is no need to measure the amount of salt with precision weights, you just need to make sure the resulting tonicity of the saline solution is such that it does not irritate the mucous membranes – which is the whole point of using it instead of clean water. Normal saline solution tastes slightly saline, but if you use a little more salt, no harm, it will work just the same. Using a little less salt, on the other hand, will cause the irritation of the mucous membranes, an unplesant sensation, which will likely move you to abandoning the whole exercise – and that would be a real pity. If you manage to achieve the salinity AND the temperature of the water JUST RIGHT, there should be no particular sensation in your nose when sniffing in the water – just as if nothing at all was happening.

If at all possible, use non-chlorinated drinking water and pure sea salt (without anything else added). If you live in an area where water purity is a concern, boil the water before use. You can also use sterilized or distilled water, if you wish, but this may be an unnecessary overkill. I have always use filtered tap water and never experienced any problems following the application of the technique.

As long as common sense (if something does not feel all right, don't do it) and the directions above are followed, I can very much recommend this technique, not only in cases of disease but also for maintaining optimum health. Yogic teachings attribute the use of this technique a great many positive effects, not all of them physical! Question for André Saine

Q: How far can we push homeopathy when it comes to curing serious and painful teeth problems such as root abscesses or full-blown caries? I have succeeded in curing cases of abscess or toothache, but how to cure caries if there are no more symptoms to prescribe on? If the toothache caused by caries disappears and no more symptoms are present, according to Hahnemann, the patient should be cured, but in this case, I am not sure, considering the fact that caries often remains painless until an advanced stage is reached. Will the carious tooth remineralize, if we prescribe correctly?

A: I always encourage patients to deal with dental abscesses with homeopathy, and discouraged them of getting any root canal. Caries of bones is easy to deal with homeopathy, however caries of teeth... Read the full answer »
