CARBOLICUM ACIDUM

Carbolicum Acid.

C6 H5 OH.

This collection contains, besides all clinical symptoms that could be found in the journals, the principal symptoms from the provings of Lilienthal, Bacmeister, Hoyne, Duncan, Hedges, Boyce, Williamson, Price, and Haeseler; also some toxicological symptoms, the principal ones among them being referable to a report of surgical cases by Billroth, published in Chirurgische Klinik and reprinted in vol. 99, 1879, of Allg. Hom. Zeitung; they are designated, t. The symptoms marked '(In sick:)' were contributed by Von Tagen.

MIND. [1]

Insensibility.
Loss of memory.
(In sick:) Forgetfullness, she cannot remember anything, becomes easily confused.
(In sick:) She starts to do something and forgets it.
(In sick:) She has difficulty of remembering events that have passed.
(In sick:) She has periods of mental abstraction.
Absentminded, starts when spoken to, nervous tremor.
Inability to fix mind on anything or retain what is read.
Muddled and confused.
(In sick:) She had sense of bewilderment.
Mind unusually clear, desirous for intellectual work.
Entire disinclination to study; what he had accomplished seemed very trifling.
Disinclination to mental efforts, even to read.
Disinclination for mental or bodily labor.
Constantly agitated, moaning continuously and occasionally uttering a piercing cry; recognizes no one. ~ Acute hydrocephalus.
Depressed; morose; irritable.
Fear of impending sickness, evening in bed.
Very irritable.
(In sick:) She became petulant and impatient although naturally good, quiet and gentle.
Mental and physical exhilaration.
Restless: cries out in sleep; t. ~ Meningitis.

SENSORIUM. [2]

Felt as if staggering, like a drunken man.
Giddiness, not amel. by shutting eyes.
Vertigo: on going up and down stairs; amel. by walking fast in open air, agg. by sitting down, fear of falling; with trembling.

INNER HEAD. [3]

Aching and burning pain in forehead, amel. by pressure of cold hand.
Dull frontal headache in centre of forehead.
Dull frontal headache: with chilliness; with general lassitude; amel. in open air.
Feeling of tightness across forehead, directly above frontal sinuses.
Dull frontal headache, as if an india-rubber band was stretched tightly over forehead, from temple to temple.
Frontal headache and oppression of chest, going left to right.
(In sick:) Intense pressing pains through temples and in top of head; even down to nape of neck, stiffness and soreness were felt.
(In sick:) She had severe semilateral headache, extending over vertex, this entire surface was sensitive to touch.
Burning pain in right temple and vertex.
Dull, heavy pain through temples, with tight band across forehead, and tightness in nose between eyes.
Pressure in left temple, seemingly on surface of brain.
Twitching pain through temples, neuralgic pains in left.
Jagging pain in head, agg. from light and noise.
Sharp, darting neuralgic pain in head, changing situation from one side to the other.
Dull pain running from forehead to occiput.
Burning pain in top of head.
Sensation as of fine electric sparks in vertex, changing to a prickling, itching, amel. by rubbing.
Feeling in top of head as if brain was swashing about.
Headache in upper half of head, in morning.
Dull pressure and pain in occiput and muscles of back of neck, especially just behind ears.
Expansive pains in head, with swimming before eyes.
Head felt as if enclosed in a band, which at times seemed to compress and crush in head, agg. in temples.
Fullness of head all over brain, with dull pains.
Head feels very heavy.
Numbness in head after reading, with pressure in temples.
Headache, with nausea, amel. by a cup of green tea.
Pressure or a tight bandage, amel. headache temporarily, also amel. while smoking after tea; agg. bending head forward.
Reading agg. pressure in occiput.
Severe burning in brain, over eyebrows in evening.
(In sick:) Her brain throbbed and entire head ached.
Rush of blood to head, face flushed.
Congestive headache.
Basilar meningitis; acute hydrocephalus.
Periodical spells of sick headache, about time of menses.

OUTER HEAD. [4]

Tinea capitis; vermin on head; itching of scalp.
Scalp sensitive to touch, could not comb or brush hair.
Sweat on head from least exertion.
Sensation of coldness, like cold sensation experienced when nerve of tooth is touched, in one spot on head, stooping, followed by clammy sweat.
Cold clammy moisture on head.
Feels like rubbing head and eyes.
Retraction of head. ~ Hydrocephalus
Small pustulous vesicle a little to left of vertex.

SIGHT AND EYES. [5]

Cannot see across room.
Sensitive to light; headache.
Swimming before eyes.
Constant dark spot in front of left eye.
Letters seem to run together while writing.
Things look as if they were moving backward and forward.
Pupils contracted and insensible to light; t.
Alternate contraction and dilatation of pupils. ~ Hydrocephalus.
Neuralgic twitching in eyeballs.
Eyelids open, move up and down constantly; t.
Very severe orbital neuralgia over right eye.
Neuralgia of right eye and temple.
Slight pain over right eyebrow; the same kind of pain, but in a milder degree, under right patella; both of short duration.
Acute piercing pain in a small spot on left supraorbital ridge before rising; spot remains sore to touch.
Watering of left eye and watery discharge from nose, in evening.
Pains in head affect eye of painful side so much, it is difficult to keep it open.

HEARING AND EARS. [6]

Pressing pain in left ear, transient.
(In sick:) She had a tingling, numb feeling in ear, followed by humming, buzzing sound.
(In sick:) Beating pain with a humming sound in both ears.
(In sick:) Meatus auditorius externum excoriated and covered with small pustular eruption, extending inward.
Pain from throat extends into ear.
Itching of right ear.

SMELL AND NOSE. [7]

Smell more acute.
Watery discharge from both nostrils, in open air, amel. indoors, returning when entering a cold room. ~ Coryza.
Fetid discharge from nose. ~ Diphtheria.
(In sick:) Same secretion was blown from nose as was hawked from throat.
Stinging in left nostril, with watery discharge from nose and eye.
Both nostrils plugged up.
When blowing nose, mucus bloody, or bright red blood.
Nasal membrane so tumefied, must breathe through mouth. ~ Scarlatina.
Feeling of expansion in nasal passage, when walking out of doors.
Tightness in nose between eyes.
Sensation at left wing of nose as of fine electric sparks, wants to rub the part repeatedly.
Itching of nose.
Nasal catarrh, ozaena, discharge very offensive.
Epithelioma on nose.
A small vesicle formed on centre of nose.

UPPER FACE. [8]

Face sensitive to touch of towel.
Face flushed and burns. ~ Headache.
Face pale; and anxious.
White circle around mouth, rest of face dusky red. ~ Scarlatina.
Sallow, soapy and bloodless complexion.
Twitching in cheeks and temples.
Drawing pain in jaw, right side.
Sharp pain about centre of cheek, as if bitten by a mosquito.
Itching of face; of right cheek.
A momentary chill runs from face downward, in a hot room.
Slight pustular eruption on right side of face.
Lupus of face.
Cold sweat on face; t.

LOWER FACE. [9]

Slight lividity of lips; t.
Lips dry, cracked, painful or black. ~ Scarlatina.
Burning on lips.

TEETH AND GUMS. [10]

Aching of teeth of right upper jaw. ~ Toothache.
Grinding of teeth. ~ Hydrocephaloid.
Sordes.

TASTE, SPEECH, TONGUE. [11]

Coppery metallic taste on tongue and upper palate.
Burning and tingling of tongue, as if a thousand pins were pricking it.
Burning of tongue, especially on tip.
Biting sensation on tongue.
Not able to protrude tongue.
Tongue trembling and like raw beef.
Tongue dry and chippy; parched and fissured.
Tongue: white; dark brown; thick, yellow white fur down centre (scarlatina); red papillae project here and there; shiny, glossy, dry coating; covered with thick yellow fur.
Tongue dark brown coat, sordes. ~ Remittent autumnal fever.

INNER MOUTH. [12]

Profuse secretion of bluish-white frothy saliva.
Foaming at mouth; t.
Mouth and throat full of thick, viscid mucus.
Swelling and soreness of inner side of left cheek, opposite molars.
Thrush, aphthae, stomatitis.
Mouth and tongue black, sordes and ulcerated patches on inside of lips and cheeks. ~ Scarlatina.
Intensely bad smell from mouth. ~ Diphtheria. ~ Scarlatina. ~ Constipation.
White hardened or corrugated patches of mucous membranes; t.
Breath fetid and repulsive. ~ Scarlatina.

PALATE AND THROAT. [13]

Fauces fiery red, swollen; diphtheritic patches; breath almost unbearable. ~ Scarlatina.
Dryness of posterior nares.
Full feeling in throat, with constant desire to swallow.
Liquids, on being swallowed, return by nose. ~ Scarlatina.
Choking feeling in throat, with disposition to hawk up phlegm.
Hawking of mucus from pharynx and posterior nares.
(In sick:) Tingling, burning, dryness in throat; later soreness, tumefaction and swelling of surrounding structures.
Sharp stitches in throat.
Burning in throat and esophagus, with heat, rising up from stomach.
Entire pharynx, uvula and velum palati looked glazed, had reddish, pearly hue, not unlike early manifestations of diphtheria; tonsils were swollen and involved in like manner.
Diphtheria; exudation imbedded in mucous membrane with fetor oris.
Fauces covered with exudate, glands of neck swollen, aphonia, croup-like cough, fetid discharge from nose, violent fever, pulse 130. ~ Diphtheria.
Spasmodic contraction of esophagus.
Mucous membrane of esophagus dry, brownish, shrunken.
Soreness of throat, agg. on right side.
Pain in throat extending to ear.
Throat amel. while smoking after tea (supper).

APPETITE, THIRST. DESIRES, AVERSIONS. [14]

Loss of all appetite.
Excessive thirst.
(In sick:) Thirst and dryness of mouth and lips; amel. by cooling drinks.
Desire for whisky and tobacco.

EATING AND DRINKING. [15]

Felt as if she had eaten too much.
While eating a little breakfast, felt every now and then as if he had to get up and vomit.

HICCOUGH, BELCHING, NAUSEA AND VOMITING. [16]

Hiccough after dinner.
Nausea: from cold water; in morning; in throat.
Constant belching up of wind from stomach. ~ Constipation.
Fruitless eructations.
Acid eructations and formation of gas.
(In sick:) Sometimes sweetish regurgitation, at other times bitter or sour, or like buttermilk and cabbage.
Vomiting of dark olive green or back fluid; t.
Vomiting, with great restlessness; t.
Vomiting. ~ Pregnancy. ~ Seasickness. Cancer.
Vomiting; of drunkards; vomits everything taken into stomach. ~ Bright's disease.
Chronic vomiting, sarcinae in vomit.

SCROBICULUM AND STOMACH. [17]

Weight in epigastrium, as though burdened with flatulence; seeks relief in fruitless eructating, and pressing hand on pit of stomach.
Burning in stomach.
Distress in stomach, with deathly faintness and great sensitiveness to smells.
Empty gone feeling, also with sensation of weight, or with fullness in stomach, and constant desire to swallow.
Soreness in stomach and bowels.
A great deal of pain changing about from stomach to sides, especially right side and chest.
Dyspepsia; aching in stomach; diarrhea, followed by constipation; colicky pains.
Cancer of stomach.

HYPOCHONDRIA. [18]

Uncomfortable feeling across stomach and liver.
Pain in right hypochondrium; also in iliac region of both sides.
Sharp pain in right hypochonder. ~ Remittent autumnal fever.
Soreness of hypochondria agg. on motion.
Dull pressing pains in hypochondria.

ABDOMEN AND LOINS. [19]

Sinking feeling all over abdomen.
Rumbling and rolling in abdomen, with a sense of distention.
Sensation of distension in abdomen, as if full of wind, but does not pass any.
A burning or digging feeling low down in abdomen.
Frequent occurrence of colic-like pains.
Colic of nursing infants.
Great tenderness over transverse colon.
Bowels feel sore, when walking.
Bowels bloated and full of flatus three hours after a meal.
Rumbling in bowels, feeling as if diarrhea would come on after walking about.
Flatulence of old age depending on imperfect digestion.
Jolting during riding affects unpleasantly the abdominal organs, which feel hot and sore.
Burning on outside of abdomen.
Abdomen retracted, with constipation. ~ Hydrocephalus.
A crampy stitch in left inguinal region while sitting.
Abdominal muscles feel sore.
Itching of lower part of abdomen, as if bitten by something.

STOOLS AND RECTUM. [20]

Emission of putrid flatus.
Flatulence of old people. ~ Dyspepsia.
Fetid odor.
Stool, like thick glue, passed in thin strips, like tape.
Bloody and mucous discharge, appearing like scraping of mucous membrane; tenesmus. ~ Dysentery.
Looseness of bowels, stools of appearance as in bilious diarrhea.
Watery evacuations, with pain and sick stomach.
Involuntary thin, black stools. ~ Collapse.
Involuntary stools of intolerable odor. ~ Puerperal fever.
Diarrhea, with vomiting of everything taken; desire to drink; rice-water discharge of very offensive odor, resembling that of rotten eggs. ~ Summer complaint.
Diarrhea, resulting from bad drainage.
Dysentery: bloody, mucous stools, like scrapings; tenesmus; tenderness over transverse colon; tongue dry and coated with thick, yellow fur; great thirst and high fever; pulse 110.
Involuntary stools, at night in bed.
Constant ineffectual urging to stool.
Periodical spells of diarrhea, followed by constipation. ~ Hydrocephalus.
Constipation.
Sluggishness of bowels, accompanied by offensive breath.
Great tenderness of rectum.
Disagreeable hot burning sensation in rectum.
Anus itches and feels as if skin was rubbed off.
Hemorrhoids, with tenderness of rectum, also external, sometimes bleeding.

URINARY ORGANS. [21]

Tired sensation in renal region.
A dark greenish-brown color of urine.
Greenish urine. ~ After scarlatina.
Urine scanty and red. ~ Scarlatina.
Urine: golden yellow; grass or olive green; very dark colored; black or blackish olive green.
Frequent micturition.
Straining on passing urine.
Urine increased, had a strong smell.
Micturated freely an excessive quantity of saccharine urine; obliged to void urine three times every night, and no less than a pint each time; greatly debilitated thereby. ~ Diabetes.
Urine contained albumen; t. ~ Meningitis.
While urinating always an involuntary mucous discharge from anus.

MALE SEXUAL ORGANS. [22]

Awakened by strong sexual excitement.
Sexual desire very much decreased; in one case lost for thirteen day.
Sexual organs relaxed and weak, lascivious dreams, with weakening seminal emissions.
Prickling pain through glans penis and urethra.
Intense burning itching of genitals.
Itching of scrotum and inside of thighs amel. by scratching, but it soon returns.

FEMALE SEXUAL ORGANS. [23]

Pain in region of left ovary, when walking in open air, soon subsiding.
Painful swelling of left ovary. ~ Remittent autumnal fever.
Menses irregular.
Menses too profuse, dark color, followed by headache and great nervous irritability.
Menorrhagia: sinking spells, during which she thought she would die, with cold clammy skin, sallow, soapy, bloodless complexion, irritability of stomach, food lies heavy, flatulence, sour belching, fullness in throat, swollen feeling; constant disposition to swallow, globus hystericus; alternate diarrhea and constipation.
Induration of cervix uteri.
Ulceration on cervix uteri; agg. after caustics, discharge of fetid, greenish, acrid matter from vagina; agg. after menses, which was profuse and lasted six to eight days.
Mucous tubercles on labia and inner thighs, with vaginal discharge.
Copious discharge of fetid, greenish, acrid matter from vagina. ~ Leucorrhea.

PREGNANCY. PARTURITION. LACTATION. [24]

Vomiting in pregnancy; great irritability; violent frontal headache.
Puerperal fever; high fever alternating with often recurring chills of short duration, followed by profuse sweat with restlessness; tenderness over uterus and right iliac fossa; pulse 160; diarrhea, involuntary stools of intolerable odor; lochia suppressed; craving for food; thirst.

VOICE AND LARYNX. TRACHEA AND BRONCHIA. [25]

Aphonia.
Diphtheria.
Soreness of respiratory organs, with hoarseness.
Hoarseness, with stiff neck.
Hawking of clear white mucus.
Left side of larynx very sore to pressure.
Tickling in throat causing short hacking cough.
Catarrhal croup.
Chronic laryngitis and bronchitis.

RESPIRATION. [26]

(In sick:) Respiration uneven and irregular.
Stertorous respiration.
Difficult respiration, with sense of oppression.
Desire to take long inspirations, with yawning.
Sighing or moaning expirations; t.
(In sick:) Her breath was hot and feverish.
Shortness of breath on going up hill or up-stairs.
Dyspnea at night.

COUGH. [27]

Constant inclination to cough.
Short, dry, hacking cough, with tickling in throat; can hardly retain anything on stomach.
Troublesome cough, with foul tenacious expectoration.
Croup-like cough. ~ Diphtheria.
Whooping cough, with redness of face, watering of eyes and frontal headache.
Expectoration of a large quantity of thick, whitish mucus.

INNER CHEST AND LUNGS. [28]

Dull pain through upper lobes of lungs, afternoon.
Slight uneasy pains in right lung.
Dull aching in left side of chest and abdomen, running around to scapula.
Chest feels as if compressed, or as if a load was pressing in front; desire to dilate chest.
Tight feeling in both lungs, especially in outer chest.
Feeling of narrowness in chest, as if diaphragm depressed lungs.
Oppression of chest and frontal headache, going from left to right.
Feeling of expansion in lungs and nasal passages, when walking out of doors.
(OBS:) Phthisis pulmonalis.
Gangrene of lung.

HEART, PULSE AND CIRCULATION. [29]

Stitches in region of heart.
Bellow murmur over mitral valves; dyspnea and palpitation, agg. at night; heart agg. after indiscretion in eating; must walk very slow on account of heart beating, is exhausted by ascending. ~ Organic valvular heart disease, consequent upon inflammatory rheumatism eight years previously.
Violent fever, pulse 130. ~ Diphtheria.
Pulse: rapid (120), feeble and flickering; intermittent, sometimes slow; feeble and flickering; small and rapid.
Pulse irregular. ~ Hydrocephaloid.
Pulse 160. ~ Puerperal fever.

OUTER CHEST. [30]

Transient dull pain under left clavicle.
Sensation as of fine electric sparks on sternal end of right clavicle.
Dull pressure under sternum, in region of sixth rib.
(In sick:) Slight tingling along left side of chest.
Cold sweat on chest; t.
Scirrhous cancer of left breast. Carb. ac., 2d dec., every two hours for two years.

NECK AND BACK. [31]

Jerking in left common carotid artery while walking rapidly after dinner.
Twitching in right sterno-cleido-mastoid muscle; t. ~ Meningitis.
Stitching pains in right side of neck.
Drawing in muscles of neck.
Neck feels lame and stiff, when moving head.
Neck very stiff and sore; feels as if he had taken a bad cold. ~ Remittent fever.
Very great sense of weight on neck, with tenderness even to touch, on seventh cervical vertebra.
Glands of neck swollen. ~ Diphtheria.
Itching of back of neck and back.
Aching pains in small of back, agg. when straightening, from jolting when riding, amel. by pressure.
She has dragging sensation across loins and throughout pelvis.
Boring pains in small of back, with a cold.
Severe pain in lumbo-sacral region, mostly during latter part of night, of long standing.
Soreness of muscles of back and limbs.

UPPER LIMBS. [32]

Fetid perspiration in armpits.
Pains in right shoulder without suffering from moving arm.
Aching pains in left shoulder, like a toothache, when lying on right side.
Severe rheumatic pains in right shoulder; feeling as though it would be impossible to raise arm, but when effort was made it aggravated pain but very little. ~ Rheumatism.
Drawing pain in left arm, from shoulder and elbow.
Soreness of muscles of right arm.
(In sick:) Tingling, burning and numb feeling down left arm to tips of fingers, followed by dull aching, heavy feeling.
Aching pain in left forearm.
Creeping, shuddering or horripilation in left forearm, running upward.
Constant tired, heavy feeling in left arm.
Twitching of arms, principally right; t. ~ Meningitis.
Contracting pain in palm of right hand.
Sensation as of fine electric sparks on middle finger of left hand.
Trembling of hands; cannot write steadily.
Spasmodic flexion of hands on forearms; t.
Slight lividity of finger tips.
Numbness of skin of hands.
Stiffness and pricking in hand, followed by a pimple on middle finger (where the acid touched), which increased to size of a carbuncle.
Vesicular eruption on hands and all over body, which itches excessively; amel. after rubbing, but leaving a burning pain.
Tingling-itching in little finger of right hand, soon after in left.
Pain in second phalangeal joint of middle finger of right hand.

LOWER LIMBS. [33]

Aching in both hips; in right hip and left knee.
Rheumatic pain in right hip joint.
Deep-seated muscular pain on inside of upper third of left thigh.
A faint feeling spreading from thighs all over body.
Aching soreness beneath left patella, all day up to about 4 o'clock P. M.; feels as if it would be stiff and sore to move it, but is not felt at all.
Sore, bruised feeling, or tingling-itching in leg, during motion.
Lower extremities feel heavy as lead.
Paralysis of lower extremities; t. ~ Meningitis.
Sensation just below knee on skin as if it was touched with a piece of ice.
Sharp pain in left shin.
Aching pain to left of middle of left shin bone.
Dull pain in right ankle and left knee.
Bruised pain beneath left tendo-achillis.
Pain in great toes.
Feet feel heavy, bruised.
Fetid perspiration of feet.
Carbuncle on hip of lady, aet. 50.
Edema of both legs; t. ~ Meningitis.
Chronic ulcers on feet and ankles.
Chronic ulcers on feet and ankles, deep, emitting a strong odor and burning like fire.

LIMBS IN GENERAL. [34]

Numb ache in arms and legs. ~ Remittent fever.
Stiffness of limbs. ~ Hydrocephaloid.
Cold hands and feet.

REST. POSITION. MOTION. [35]

Lying: in bed, tired.
Sitting: down agg. vertigo; crampy stitch left inguinal region.
Bending: head forward agg. headache.
Stooping: coldness in head.
Writing: letters run together.
Walking: fast amel. vertigo; rumbling in bowels; pain in left ovary; up-stairs, short breath; out-doors, feeling of expansion in lungs and nasal passages; heart beats.

NERVES. [36]

(In sick:) She had nervous trembling.
Trembling, uncertain, straggling walk.
Tonic spasms of arms.
Trembling and convulsions.
Partial convulsive movements. ~ Hydrocephaloid.
Easily fatigued by least walk.
Complains of feeling very tired, even while lying in bed. ~ Remittent fever.
Feels as if he had taken a bad cold. ~ Remittent fever.
General malaise, great languor and weakness.
Profound prostration; physical exhaustion; surface pale, bathed in cold sweat; collapse.
Became thoroughly unfit for study, as every exercise at reading increased all symptoms, especially pressing at occiput.

SLEEP. [37]

Yawning, with desire to take long inspirations.
Constant inclination to yawn, languid and sleepy, desire to stretch.
(In sick:) She slept by spells; sleep unsatisfactory; fitful starting.
Sleeps uneasily, starts; eyes half closed. ~ Scarlatina.
Wakes often during night.
Heavy and sleepy, perplexed with dreams, wakes unrefreshed.
Somnolency, sopor, ending in coma.
Dreams: unable to recall; of fire; amorous; of traveling.

TIME. [38]

Night: dyspepsia agg.; fearful beating of heart; severe pain in lumbo-sacral region; wakes often; sweat.
Morning: headache in upper half of head; nausea.
All day up to 4 o'clock; aching pain beneath patella.

TEMPERATURE AND WEATHER. [39]

Room feels close and hot.
Cold: hand, pressure amel. aching and burning pain in forehead; water, nausea.
Open air: chilly; watery discharge from both nostrils; walking in, pain in region of left ovary.

FEVER. [40]

Chilly sensation while in a warm room.
Chill in open air.
A momentary chill runs from face downward, in a hot room.
Chill, followed by fever and very slight sweat, with numb ache in arms and legs; pulse small and rapid; agg. about sundown and through night; felt as if he had taken a bad cold.
High fever, alternating with often recurring chills of short duration, followed by profuse sweat, with restlessness. ~ Puerperal fever.
Was covered with perspiration.
Sweat at night.
Typhoid and low miasmatic fevers.
Fever of enteric type.
Remittent fever, occurring every autumn.
Intermittent fever, with enlargement of spleen.
Scarlet fever.

ATTACKS, PERIODICITY. [41]

Pains sharp, come suddenly, last a short time, disappear suddenly.
Periodical: spells of sick headache.

LOCALITY AND DIRECTION. [42]

Symptoms go from head downward.
Affected right side first and afterwards same parts of left. ~ Remittent fever.
From left to right: frontal headache.

Touch: tooth, coldness; left supraorbital spot sore to.
Reading: numbness of head; pressure in occiput.
Extensive scald (in glycerine externally).
Burns, especially if they ulcerate and discharge is offensive.
Lacerated wounds from blunt instruments; bones bare or crushed and splintered.

Offensive odor from skin.
Erysipelas.
Itching of skin of various parts of body; amel. by scratching, but soon returns.
Innumerable small (miliary) vesicles over whole body.
Eruption not diffused equitably over entire surface, interrupted in many places, and of a dusky red color. ~ Scarlatina.
Malignant forms of scarlatina.
Pustular and vesicular eruptions.
Confluent variola.
Acne, eczema, impetigo, scabies, psoriasis inveterata, leprosy; prurigo; pityriasis versicolor; lupus, carbuncles and cancerous sores; sloughing wounds; chronic ulcers.
Ulcers with foul odor.

RELATIONS. [48]

Antidotes: chalk, but better Calc. sacch., prepared by dissolving sixteen parts refined sugar in forty parts water, and adding five parts slaked lime; digest three days; stir occasionally, filter, and evaporate to dryness.
Huseman and Wood say, use sweet oil or castor oil as an antidote, as according to Lemaire it will cause the acid to be more slowly absorbed; emetics are generally useless.
Incompatible: glycerine and vegetable oils being solvents spread and increase its action.
Compare: Gelsem., Mercur. and Sulphur in bandlike headache; Arsenic., Carb. veg., Cinchon. and Kreosot. in burns, ulcers, etc., with unhealthy, offensive discharge.
